Apparently there is a lack of law enforcement in Emerald Isle. Because I know when I walk around in town I feel like I may be mugged or something. Yeah right! This town has an outstanding police department that seems to have plenty of funding. The last thing I worry about is my car or house getting broken into, or worse.
The town is now applying for yet another grant to supposedly pay for another officer. Didn’t they just get a grant for some type of night vision goggles or some overpriced techno-junk along those lines? The goggle garbage was supposed to allow one officer to search for a suspect in an area that would require four officers to search without them or something like that.
So since the big “economic crisis” has hit, the town council probably felt it prudent or politically correct to leave a vacant position vacant on the town’s police force. Honestly, I haven’t noticed a big spike in violent or any other crime though. And if there was, would one more beat cop bring an end to it?
As I read the grant document, the first thing I noticed was Chief Hargett’s name. That’s a pretty prominent name around here, and I can’t help but wonder if his friends/relatives in higher government offices help push this grant through for him.
The town is seeking grant funding in the amount of $152,882.00. This amount is supposed to pay for ONE officer for THREE years! I think to myself, “Damn them cops in Emerald Isle get paid good!” I started thinking I might need to take that three week course at the community college so I can be a cop in EI. I mean $50,960.67 a year is pretty good salary for an entry level police officer.
But then I read further into it. OBVIOUSLY EIPD isn’t offering a starting salary of 50K/year for a police officer. I’m sure the salary for the poor entry level officer will be slightly more than half that amount. So where does the rest go? I wonder.
